Vinícius Mendes: (saxophones, flute, clarinet) multi-instrumentalist, composer/improviser and researcher. Bachelor in Popular Music from UFMG and Master in Music from the same institution. He began his studies with Professor Ana Claudia Santos Letro, studying theory, music history and saxophone. He joined CEFAR-Palácio das Artes where he studied with Professor Rubio Veiga and Nestor Lombida. In the Popular Music course at UFMG, he studied under the guidance of professor Cléber Alves where he participated in the saxophone quartet in popular music and in the Geraes Big Band. He is a researcher, specializing in improvisation in Free Jazz and in Brazilian Popular Instrumental Music.
He is part of the research group on improvisation at UFMG (IMPROVISA) in partnership with professors Cliff Korman, Mauro Rodrigues and Guilherme Pelucci. He participated in workshops with Jovino Santos Neto (pianist), Mike Tracy (USA saxophonist) and Franziska Schroeder (DEU improviser and saxophonist).
He worked as an instrumentalist with renowned musicians from the Belo Horizonte instrumental scene such as Rafael Martini, Frederico Heliodoro, Túlio Araújo and also as singers/ songwriters such as Duzão Mortimer, Rafael Soares, Ana Proença. In August 2014, he released his first instrumental work with his quartet at the Savassi Jazz festival- Vinícius Mendes Quarteto. In December 2015 he recorded the album NAU, an experience of free music methodologies mixing instrumental Brazilian popular music, free atonalism, free jazz and free improvisation.
The album featured musicians Cliff Korman on piano, Gabriel Bruce on drums and Trigo Santana on bass. In 2016 he began touring work for the NAU first at Sesc Palladium in 2016 in the Quarta Instrumental project then at the VAC (summer contemporary art) in 2017. With the NAU the musician also performed in São Paulo at the Estúdio Fita Crepe and at the JazzB next door. by Felix Wagner (piano), Noa Stroeter (acoustic bass) and João Fidelis (drums).
In 2021 he recorded the album Macunaísmo Tardio. Album that featured original compositions, as well as re-readings by composers such as Joyce and Toninho Horta, as well as an arrangement for the composition Variações, by Lucca Noacco. In this album, Lucas de Moro on Rhodes and Wurlitzer pianos, Paulo Cardoso on acoustic and electric bass and Cyrano Almeida on drums participated.
Currently, he works in the samba scene of Belo Horizonte as an instrumentalist and arranger, being a musician of the group Simplicidade Samba and also playing with other samba musicians in the city.
